🎖️ Did You Know? Some Moving Costs Are Still Deductible for Active-Duty Military

You can deduct some moving costs if you’re active-duty military relocating under orders. #TaxDeductions
When it comes to tax deductions, moving expenses used to be a helpful break for many taxpayers — but the rules have changed over the years. If you’re an active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, this deduction might still save you money.
Here’s what you need to know:
🚚 Who Qualifies?
Only active-duty military members can claim moving expenses if they move due to a permanent change of station (PCS). This includes:
- Moving from your home to your first post of active duty.
- Moving from one permanent post to another.
- Moving back home or to a final destination within the U.S. when you retire, separate, or are discharged.
🧾 What Can You Deduct?
You can deduct reasonable, unreimbursed expenses for:
✅ Packing and shipping household goods.
✅ Travel and lodging for yourself and your family.
✅ Moving cars or pets (yes, really!).
But you can’t deduct meals during the move.
📅 How Do You Claim It?
- Use Form 3903 when you file your federal return.
- Keep your orders and all receipts related to the move.
- Make sure you haven’t already been reimbursed for the same expenses by the government.
✏️ Why It Matters
This deduction lowers your taxable income — meaning you could owe less or get a bigger refund. For military families who move often, every dollar helps!
